We are continuing our series: “Walk according to the Spirit.” Romans 8: 1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
We talked last week about what it means to live “according to the Spirit”. We emphasized the word “according”... it means to be in harmony, in sync, in agreement with; that I'm conforming to something. It means that every thought, word, action, behavior is in harmony and is in sync with the Holy Spirit.
I thought that it was necessary to talk about “who “the Holy Spirit is. He is a Person, who has feelings like God does; He can be grieved; He can be vexed; in Romans 8 it says that He intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.
And when He works in our spirit; because our soul our mind emotion is so intimately connected to our spirit, it touches our emotions.
I'm going to take a look at one section of scripture today and talk about the “Holy Spirit Advantage”. In our spiritual lives we have an advantage due to the person of the Holy Spirit. Let's read about it:
John 16: 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
The Holy Spirit - the “Helper” accomplishes four things in our life: He convicts, He guides us into truth, He is a Prophet and He glorifies Jesus. There is a unique relationship in the Godhead in that the three persons of the Godhead: Father, Son and Holy Spirit are all coequal and worthy of worship, and yet there is submission and obedience One to Another. Jesus exalts the Father; while on earth He only spoke what He heard the Father speaking - He only did what He saw the Father do.
In the same way the Holy Spirit only does what He sees Jesus do…and He exalts the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is like a spotlight that shines in our hearts to reveal everything that's there; whether it is of God or not and when the spotlight hits the stage - it’s not me or you that's magnified and not even the Holy Spirit Himself that is exalted….but Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords takes center stage as the Holy Spirit's light illuminates Him.
